Much is being written these days about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. These technologies take advantage of our ever increasing ability to process larger amounts of information, in shorter periods of time, and offer the hope of obtaining beneficial insights.

Having the ability to sift through massive piles of data in the hope of gleaning superior knowledge is, of course, very intriguing. As a computer scientist and a philosopher, my hope is that these technologies can be used to create a better world.

However, the risk with new inventions is that those who control them are often their sole beneficiaries. Some social media platforms, on-line shopping sites, and foreign governments come to mind.

To be fair, there are also good ways in which artificial intelligence can be used. Some examples include: cancer research, diagnosis of illnesses, and computer security.

It is humans who determine the moral effect of any technology.

The “better world” we desire will not be born from new technologies. It will be forged by the moral character of the individuals living in that world.

May we never lose sight of this fact, or the history that proves it.
