DNA and the White Stone

Science has shown that all living things are based on an amazing structural hierarchy keyed to a single type of molecule called DNA. More complex organisms are composed of organs, muscle and bone. These contain tissues which consist of various types of cells. Each of these cells, although unique in purpose, are strikingly similar in structure. Ultimately there are only two types of cells, those with a nucleus, and those without. Either way, it is the DNA within each cell that determines the function of that cell.

Some philosophers have used these scientific discoveries to support an ultra-deterministic view of human existence. They say that everything we are, do, and become, is a product of our physical make-up, environment, social group, and other factors beyond our control. They say we are like little silver balls in a cosmic Pachinko machine.

Ideas matter. Ideas matter because, once we assent to an idea, we begin to act “as if” it is true. Our acting then “makes” it true (in a sense) for us and our surroundings.

But what if there is a “big truth” that encapsulates all of our “little truths”?

Deep down inside, none of us wants to be like a Pachinko ball. Our hearts tell us that we are not. Our minds burst with ideas, plans, and desires for something more. We want to matter, we want to belong, we want to be special, somehow.

On the Isle of Patmos, God told Saint John an amazing thing. God said, “…to him who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name written on the stone which no one knows except him who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17).

This white stone tells us our true name, our true identity, our true destiny. It is our ticket to eternity, if only we would seek it!

We can. Let’s walk together and seek that which lasts forever.
